Resolution: Organization
How is everyone? I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!
So here we are beginning a new year. That means it is time for resolutions. Perhaps a better name for them would be The-Road-to-Hell Resolutions. We all know what that road is paved with.
Follow up:
That being said, I have made a resolution that I thought I would share with you. I decided that I need to be more organized. Don’t get me wrong. Most of my friends will tell you that I am already very organized. I live by a schedule. I have no choice. Maintaining a schedule requires organization. However, I think it would be a good idea to step this up a little. We will call it hyper-organization.
I believe that the first thing that is required to be a good organizer is to understand that procrastination is your enemy. Schedules require several tools to work. If you commit to something, stop immediately and take a few minutes to do the maintenance on your schedule. Whether this means writing on a wall calendar or putting it into Outlook and setting a reminder alarm, do it now. If you make this a habit it will not take you an hour to catch up with your schedule. If something unexpected happens you can be more flexible.
All things that are the enemy of organization are made worse with procrastination. Keeping your work surfaces organized, filing, paperwork. These things require diligence to maintain. Waiting until the last minute will not make your desk any cleaner, the pile of stuff to file will not get any shorter, and those quarterly tax forms will still be staring at you and building up penalties.
One of the new tools that I will be using will be a written calendar with our schedules that will be posted where everyone will see it several times a day. I am not going to spend any money on this. It is not necessary for me to have some frou-frou calendar from Barnes & Noble to do this. However, if you go want to go this route, try these folks. They have any kind of calendar you can think of. I intend to print off each month and post it. That is it. Of course, the problems start when someone forgets to tell me what they have to do. However, that’s a whole 'nother subject.
Spontaneity is great but on a day-to-day basis it just will not work around here. No, I am not some dictator screaming at everyone to toe the line. It is just that the free time I do have is created from having a schedule. Sometimes I can even stop what I am doing and do something fun, if only for a short time.
Time management and organization will give you some control over your life so when the unexpected does happen, you will be better able to meet the challenges that we often face. Make a resolution to be more organized and see the difference it can make in your life.
