Quote of the Day
January 26th, 2010This is a quotation from Lord Acton, in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton, 1887:
"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."
Acton was preceded by William Pitt the Elder, who voiced a similar thought in a House of Lords speech in 1770:
"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it; and this I know, my lords, that where laws end, tyranny begins."
I have found that this is one of the most accurate quotes I have ever heard. It happens all the time. You will find them running countries and running small companies. I know that many of you work for supervisors that bear this out. They don’t like to be challenged so handle them with kid gloves. Seriously.
Voice Recognition
January 24th, 2010There is a Chinese curse that goes, “May you live in interesting times.” On the surface this does not seem like a curse at all. No one likes to be bored. If you live in interesting times, you do not have to worry about boredom. However, interesting times are often periods filled with strife on both a personal level and a global level. Boredom equals peace, in other words.
Resolution: Organization
January 16th, 2010How is everyone? I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!
So here we are beginning a new year. That means it is time for resolutions. Perhaps a better name for them would be The-Road-to-Hell Resolutions. We all know what that road is paved with.
