Do You Have What it Takes to be a Small Business Owner?
June 22nd, 2009The desire to become an entrepreneur always ramps up during trying economic times. People may have no choice but to change careers due to a downturn in a specific geographical area. Perhaps the job sector itself has suffered. In many cases, a recession can be a great time to start a business. Federal Express started during a recession and look where they are now.
Say Whaaaat?
June 11th, 2009On several occasions I have come across a question on a forum I visit that has me absolutely flabbergasted. This question originates from students but I still cannot fathom the cluelessness of this question. Here it is:
“When should I start using headphones?” See the title for my reaction.
Let me reiterate that this question is being asked by students. However, I cannot imagine what these folks are thinking. Do they really think that listening to dictation when everyone can hear it is the norm in the industry?
My Career Step Experience
June 9th, 2009As often happens in my life, I went about things in a backwards fashion regarding my training in medical transcription. My original training in this field was obtained on the job while working at a local hospital in the emergency department. I received generalized training in the department and I also utilized their excellent continuing education resources to take medical terminology and other courses meant for the nursing staff. These were very helpful and were broken down into specialties that gave me training in many different areas I would otherwise not have been exposed to.
Job Scams
June 8th, 2009The next project for PACE Transcription is a jobs database. While I was doing research for this project, I came across something that really bothers me. I found a website that charges transcriptionists looking for employment to view the jobs listed. This is appalling. Certainly it is acceptable to charge employers to list their jobs. It is also usual to charge to view resumes. This is the business model for Monster and the other big guys.
I believe that it shows a lack of integrity to charge someone who is looking for employment to find a job. This is the very definition of a scam. On the particular website I am referring to I could find no information on how to post a job with them, so I can only think that the job seekers were the only ones being charged for this service. This is absolutely unconscionable.
Transcription and Homeschooling
June 6th, 2009I know of many stay-at-home mothers who homeschool their children. My family is a homeschooling family. My daughter has never been to public school. I was lucky in that my husband had a career that allowed me to be home without being required to work during most of the primary school years. These years were the most labor intensive for us as homeschoolers. Looking back, I am not sure that I would have been able to maintain any type of employment during this time.
However, given the current economic climate, I would wager that many homeschooling families are dealing with the same issues that are affecting all of us. The working member of the household may have had their work hours reduced or been laid off. This puts the homeschool administrator in the position of being required to return to work to keep the household going.
